FAQ

GDM FAQ’s: Ask the Medic

There can be a few reasons, but most of the time we will find the spring has broken and the weight of the door is too heavy for the opener. A broken spring that is designed to counterbalance the door, makes the door very heavy and forces the door opener to lift the door rather than push and pull the door.

It sounds like you have a very heavy door that is not balanced, putting a lot of unnecessary stress on your garage door opener. You should consider a tune up on the door and the opener. For $99.00 we will balance the door properly and adjust the opener so it pushes and pulls the door, not just lift the door.

If you have a roll up door without a key release (a keyed release in the center of the door attached to the trolley on the garage door opener to help disengage in case of a power failure), there is no other way to open the door without damaging it. We may be able to get in to your garage if you have a one piece door, but it will require two technicians to come out. The best option would be to have us come out and assess the opening, to see what it would take to fix the problem.

Steel garage doors can be painted with any high quality exterior latex paint. Wood doors must be painted or stained prior to installation. Most models are available to be primed at the factory. Garage Door Medics recommends that wooden garage doors be repainted every one to two years.

We do not sell garage door torsion springs over the counter for liability reasons. We do not recommend homeowners replacing their own springs for safety reasons. It is dangerous work if you’ve never done it. Also, you must install the correct spring to counterbalance your door. Often, we’ve seen that the wrong spring has been originally installed—putting a lot of wear and tear on your opener. We are garage door torsion springs replacement experts and we are happy to come over and replace what’s needed safely, effectively and affordably.

Typically, they cost between $20-$100 more than traditional steel door springs. We will always give you a written quote before ordering.

Yes. If you’re looking for a custom wood sectional garage door or a specialty steel garage door and you live outside of Southern California, we can arrange to ship to your address at an additional cost. You will need to have the garage door installed by a professional technician.

Please note that custom wood doors are heavier than standard steel doors and normally require a forklift or large crew to manually unload it. We package our garage doors in wood crates for added protection–adding to the overall weight of the door.

You can disengage the trolley by pulling the red cord that is hanging in the middle of your garage. Be careful when you lift the door to make sure it stays open while pulling your car out. If you have a sectional roll up door, do not fling it open because you will not be able to shut it.

The openers we sell are professional brand openers that are constructed with solid beam rail technology. Garage door openers sold at big box retailers are constructed with a butted together rail that flexes, is louder when operating and less reliable for long-term use. If you have a problem with an opener you buy at a retail outlet, you will have to take it down and return it for the warranty. You will typically save $80 purchasing from a retail store. We can furnish and install a professional grade opener starting at $359 in about one hour and it will be warranted for one year.
